It’s no secret, here at Qdoba, we love cheese. We know we love cheese more than an average person, and we're not ashamed of it. In fact, we're proud of my love of cheese. So in honor of National Cheese Lover’s Day, we wanted to share the reasons we love cheese, and some of my favorite ways to eat it!
Let’s start with some of the health benefits (yes, cheese does have health benefits). Cheese contains nutrients like calcium, protein, phosphorus, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin B12. Cheese is also good for your pearly whites – studies have found that consuming cheese may help to reduce damaging increases in acidity of plaque surrounding teeth. Also, eating cheese helps produce more saliva, which helps to clear food and reduce the amount of sugar in the mouth. Maybe that’s why people eating cheese are always smiling!
Another reason we love cheese is simple: it makes everything better! Case and point – you have two boring slices of bread, add cheese, toss it on a frying pan. Now you have a delicious grilled cheese. Have you ever had a sandwich without cheese? Yeah, we don’t recommend it. Cheese is a staple in most meals, and does infinitely improve the taste of a cheese-less entrée.
When you love cheese as much as we do, it doesn’t really matter how it is consumed, but we do have my favorite ways to eat cheese. Think of it as guidelines to the optimal cheese consumption.
Cheese and Sausage Platter – Simple but delicious. When you walk into a party and spot a perfectly designed cheese and sausage platter, you know that party is going to be good. And even if it’s not, park yourself next to that platter. The party will immediately improve as you nosh on a variety of hand-selected cheeses that pair deliciously with several sausage choices.
Dips – Cheese makes the perfect base to any good dip. Beer cheese dip, spinach artichoke dip, buffalo chicken dip…you name it, it is probably made with a cream cheese base. And who doesn’t love a gooey, melty, warm dip? This is where you can also have some fun with your dipper. Pretzels, crackers, chips, or veggies you really can’t go wrong if you’re smothering that dipper in cheese.
Quesadillas – Like grilled cheese, but better; quesadillas are the perfect vessel to explore all the possibilities of cheese consumption, in one simple meal. Although quesadillas are traditionally a Mexican entrée, I like to put an Italian twist on the quesadilla – behold the pizza quesadilla. Load it up with your favorite pizza toppings, mozzarella, and Italian seasoning, then dip it in marinara. Or, if you’re in the mood for a more traditional quesadilla (shameless plug coming…) Qdoba can help you with that. To enhance your next quesadilla experience, try putting Queso on your quesadilla!
Mac and Cheese – Cheese covered carbs? Yes please. Like most Sconnies, I grew up on Mac and Cheese, and it is a taste I never grew out of. And why should I have to? Mac and Cheese makes the perfect side to any meal, or as a meal on its own. Mac and Cheese doesn’t have to be complicated to be delicious either. For a tasty twist on the traditional comfort food, try Queso-Mac. It is as simple as it sounds –noodled covered in our very own 3-Cheese Queso. For larger batches, Queso can be purchased by the pan for $25. Try it for your next dinner party, and be prepared for the compliments to fly in.
Queso – We may be a little biased on this one, but Queso is hands down our favorite way to consume cheese. I’ve already covered some unique ways to enjoy Queso above, but sometimes a simple order of Chips & Queso is all you need. Classic Queso or Spicy Queso Diablo, it doesn’t really matter. And as if you needed another reason to love Queso, I’ll let you in on a little secret…our test kitchen may or may not be working on another flavor of Queso to add to our menu this year! Yum….ok my lips are sealed. I’ve already said too much.
So go and enjoy your day, Cheese Lovers; may your celebrations be delicious.
